The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine’s official anniversary is March 25, 2019, marking 50 years of tremendous contributions to the community. As the school pays tribute to its five-decade journey, it is also planning a course for an inspiring future.

As Nevada’s first and longest serving medical school, UNR Med was, until last year, the state’s only public medical school.

During both the complex transition to a northern Nevada campus and an all-hands-on-deck accreditation process, the school began critical new initiatives, created and expanded partnerships, and continued significant research enterprises. It launched the Physician Assistant Studies Program, the first such program in the Nevada System of Higher Education, created new departments of OB/GYN and surgery, expanded all clinical clerkships and several residency programs, welcomed new research investigators and programs, and created a new regional campus in Elko.

UNR Med is the leading biomedical research institution in Nevada, and is further fueling the local economy and enhancing the quality of life in northern Nevada and globally. Undergraduate, graduate and medical students benefit from this research-intensive culture and learning environment.

UNR Med is committed to increasing the number of physicians in Nevada by educating and retaining more medical students. Since 1969, UNR Med has trained more than 2,000 students, residents and fellows, and one-quarter of all practicing Nevada physicians are alumni of the school.

The school has expanded partnerships, leading to new teaching, research and service programs. UNR Med created a Reno-based department of surgery to ensure medical students receive enhanced hospital-based and office education at Renown Health, the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System and the offices of surgeons in Reno. In July, in partnership with Renown Health, the school launched the Nevada System of Higher Education’s first public Physician Assistant Studies Program to train the next generation of health care providers. The school also started an Elko Family Medicine Residency Program, in partnership with Nevada Health Centers,  to increase health care access in Nevada’s rural communities.

This past summer, the School of Medicine opened the UNR Med Women’s Health Center, an outpatient clinic on campus that provides obstetrical, gynecological and midwifery care to women in Reno and northern Nevada.

UNR Med is also in the early stages of creating an integrated multispecialty group practice. This group will provide high-quality, patient-centered clinical services to the community and expand support for the school’s teaching, research and clinical missions.

Through 50 years of growth, medical research and education, UNR Med continues to focus on improving the health and well-being of northern Nevada, the entire state and beyond.
